2014 – Bryan Ager
|
Raised in Spokane, WA by two physician parents, Bryan was privileged to witness daily models of compassion and professionalism in medicine. In admiration of their service, and with a similar motivation to serve others, Bryan was inspired to pursue a career in medicine at a young age. At Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA Bryan’s intellectual passion for the health sciences flourished, serving as an Executive Officer in the Pre-Med Club and eventually majoring in Biochemistry. Despite his love for basic science, he longed for opportunities to directly apply scientific principles to the care of a person. In pursuit of patient care, Bryan matriculated at UTMB in 2011 due to its collegial atmosphere and reputation for producing capable, compassionate physicians. |
In addition to dedicating himself to his studies, Bryan also volunteered at St. Vincent’s Clinic and participated in various research projects in the field of Radiation Oncology. Through these activities, Bryan found himself inexorably drawn to cancer patients, as he compassionately yearned to help these patients face the most difficult crisis of their lives.
After his second year of medical school, Bryan’s father was diagnosed with metastatic cancer, eventually succumbing to his disease after an 8 month battle. This devastating experience electrified Bryan’s passion for cancer care and galvanized his resolve to devote his career to helping those with cancer. With this sense of purpose, Bryan aims to treat his future patients as if they were family, providing compassionate and personalized care, as well as access to state-of-the-art therapies.
Currently in his fourth year of medical school, Bryan is applying for residency in the field of Radiation Oncology. He has recently had the honor of being elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Societyand the Gold Humanism Honor Society. In his free time he enjoys exercising, playing guitar, and spending time with his wife, Katie.
After receiving the Dr. Berny Rothschild Award for Compassion in Medicine Bryan expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt letter to the Foundation. Click here to read his letter.
