2015 – Scott Walton
|
Scott Walton was born and raised in the Dallas/Fort Worth area in a home with seven siblings. Scott never had to search too far for excitement. Scott’s greatest example of compassion was his mother. She was a perfect model of selfless love and always demonstrated a constant willingness to put others’ needs before her own. Whether it was her own children, neighbors, or complete strangers, there was always someone who needed service and Scott and his brothers were frequently the ones volunteered to step up. This consistent commitment to service and compassion molded Scott into an individual who truly found pleasure in helping others. Scott was married in December, 2008 to Stephanie Stone and they were blessed with their first child, Sydney, in 2010. In 2013, their son Isaac was born and passed away due to chromosomal abnormalities. Recently, Scott and Stephanie were blessed with a healthy baby boy and are excited for this new adventure. His family is what brings him the most joy and he is grateful to be able to fulfill his role as husband and father amidst the rigors of medical school and residency training.Upon finishing high school, Scott attended Brigham Young University where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Exercise Science in 2011. He then matriculated into medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and is scheduled to graduate in 2016. He was honored to be elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society as a junior medical student and recently received the honor of election into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Scott is currently applying and interviewing for a residency position in the field of Otolaryngology and is excited to take the next step in his career and begin treating patients.
Scott entered medicine with a desire to serve others and help alleviate suffering. During his second year of medical school, Scott’s first son, Isaac, was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 and passed away. This experience provided Scott and his wife an opportunity to experience firsthand the importance of compassion in healing in medicine. Though nothing could be done medically to save their son, their physician helped them see that healing was still attainable. Through the process, Scott gained an appreciation for the importance of committing himself to being a physician healer and following that experience, he founded the Physician Healer Student Association to help educate and bring awareness to students training to be health care providers. Scott is grateful for the mentors and examples that have guided him throughout his life and medical school experience. They have helped create in him an unwavering commitment to serving others and letting compassion be his guide. He wishes to express his sincere gratitude to the Dr. Berny Rothschild Foundation for the award and for their commitment to promoting compassion in medical training. |
